Manuel Ocaña Jurado got his Ph. Degree in Chemistry in 1988 from the Complutense University of Madrid with a thesis entitled “Polarization effects on the infrared spectra of polycrystalline binary oxides” (Materials Science Institute of Madrid-CSIC). In 1988, he joined the group of Professor Egon Matijevic at Clarkson University (Potsdam, New York, USA), first, as a NATO postdoctoral fellow and finally, as a Research Associated. During their stay at Clarkson (1988-1990), his activity was mainly related to the synthesis and characterization of monodispersed inorganic colloids. In 1990, he came back to the Materials Science Institute of Madrid (CSIC) as Tenured Scientist, and in 1995, he moved to the Materials Science Institute of Seville (CSIC) where he was promoted to Research Scientist in 2001 and to Research Professor in 2010. In recent years, his research has been devoted to the study of non-toxic inorganic pigments for ceramic applications, self-assembled structures of colloidal particles and, more recently, nanostructured lanthanide-based materials for optoelectronic (lighting) and biomedical (magnetic resonance imaging, luminescent imaging, X-ray computed tomography, biosensing) applications. He has led numerous research projects financed by national and regional programs and also by privately-owned companies. He has published more than 160 scientific papers in SCI journals, which have been cited more than 6100 times, resulting a Hirsch index = 44. He has presented tenths of contributions to various meetings of the field and is also the author of five patents. He has also supervised several technicians, doctors, doctoral theses and end-of-master projects. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, of the “International Advisory Board of the European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry” (Willey), and of the “Editorial Board” of “Applied Sciences” (MDPI).
